About me

I was born in Vienna, Austria, more years ago than I care to remember, but most of my school years I spent in Salzburg. After finishing school, I went to a technical college in Tyrol for 3 years where I learned all about glass and the artistic possibilities connected with it.

I worked in Salzburg for a year and then returned to Vienna to work, making new stainglass windows and restoring old ones. In 1963 I decided to study further, namely graphic design at the Academy for Commercial Art in Vienna. I completed my degree in 1968 and during this time I started doing book illustrations as well.
During the winter holidays, to make extra money, I worked as a ski instructor. That’s where I met Pat, a South African girl, who worked as a nursery school teacher in London.
As soon as I had finished my studies we got married and left for South Africa. We arrived in Johannesburg in October 1968. Two years later our first daughter, Birgitt, was born and another two years later Kirsten made it two.

For the next 10 years I worked for various ad agencies and design studios.

I was, however, never entirely happy in the ad industry and went freelance in 1978. I have never looked back.

Over the years I have done work for newspapers such as The Star, Pretoria News and Sunday Times. I had a daily cartoon on the front page of Business Day for 13 years. Magazines I have done work for include the Financial Mail, Style, Wine and various trade and staff magazines and newsletters. One of them was the SA Builder. For 5 years I did a cartoon cover for this monthly publication. In addition I have worked for ad agencies, on calendars, posters, brochures… anything that needed cartoons.

In 1994 we realized a long held dream and moved to Cape Town. Here I got involved in illustrating books, mainly text books for all the major publishers. I have personally had 2 books published, one on sport and one educational book for children (with the help of Pat).

My framed caricatures for corporate and private clients have become very popular – see Personalised Pictures.
For my drawings I use mainly ink and water colours but I am very flexible and use other techniques, if needed.
